Study on Priests Nearing Completion
In September, The National Catholic Education Association will be publishing the latest study on priests ordained 5 to 9 years. To obtain a copy please call or write NCEA in Washington, DC.
Below is an excerpt from the study that indicates what priests are reading these days and what websites they use most.
Infuential Writers, Periodicals, and Websites
The writers which have had the most influence on the priests shifted from 1990 to 2005. In 1990 the top five were Karl Rahner, Henri Nouwen, Thomas Merton, Raymond Brown, and Edward Schillebeeckx. In 2005 they were Pope John Paul II, Henri Nouwen, Thomas Merton, Karl Rahner, and Ron Rolheiser. In 2005 Pope John Paul II was far ahead of all others.
The five periodicals which had the most influence on them in 1990 were America, National Catholic Reporter, The Priest, Origins, and Church. In 2005 the top five were America, The Priest, National Catholic Register, First Things, and Origins.
In 2005, America and The Priest were far ahead of the others.
The five websites most helpful to the priests in their ministry today are www.usccb.org, www.vatican.va, www.ewtn.com, www.zenit.org, and www.newadvent.com.
